Coffee, Cakes & Danish was the title of a different style of concert which kicked off the Autumn season for the band in St. Margaret’s Academy, Livingston. On Sunday 3rd September 2006.
A packed hall witnessed the more relaxed and informal cafe style concert. The excellent music was accompanied by coffee, cakes and Danish, the idea being to help raise funds for our Germany trip in October.
A large audience enjoyed performances by both the main band and the smaller “10 piece”, who performed five pieces.
The concert commenced with the main band playing a rousing piece called Arsenal, which was the very first piece I heard the band play back in 2002. A magnificent concert march, composed by by Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost, and great to hear it again. If you’d like to hear it again, follow this link to Arsenal on Jan Van der Roost’s own website.
A host of excellent music was to follow, including Amazing Grace, some Harry Potter, Vitae Lux (The Light of Life), Soul Bossa Nova and Adventures in Brass by Rae Farr.
The “10 piece” performed a varied programme including the Village People hit ‘Go West’, an amusing Laurel & Hardy piece, Puttin’ on the Ritz and a favourite party piece of the band, The Flight of the Bumble Bee, featuring Kenny Carlyle on Xylophone. I got the impression that there was some kind of competition here between the soloist and the band to see who could finish first!
All in all it proved to be a very successful evening as far as fundraising was concerned. The ‘Friends’ organisation did a magnificent job supplying the tea, coffee, cakes etc, and selling raffle tickets.
It was an evening of ‘light’ entertainment which reflected the cafe style atmosphere, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
