The band are proud to announce that they have just been crowned British National Youth Brass Band Champions 2008, receiving a gold award in the Premier Section at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester on Sunday 13th April 2008.
The band’s principal euphonium player, Jamie Shade, was also proud to be awarded the Best Instrumentalist in the Premier Section.
This brings the total number of British Youth Championships won by the band to eleven.
The band played the set test piece, “Essay for Brass Band” by Edward Gregson and their own choice piece, “The Last Amen” by Peter Graham for adjudicators Major Peter Parkes and David Hirst.
Unfortunately, there were no other competitors in the Premier Section, so West Lothian won unopposed, however the adjudicators were very appreciative of the standard of the West Lothian performance. 4 Bars Rest did comment that perhaps Gregson’s test piece, ‘Essay for Brass Band’ was a rather tough nut to crack, and perhaps a reason why the number of competitors in the premier section was down.
